Creepy Cute
Adelaide artists Cohen Gum and Minnette Michael presented their newest designs in a colourful exhibition of illustrations, jewellery, objects, furniture and accessories at the Urban Cow Studio in July 2011.

This website is a continuation of that exhibition in the form of an online shop. For those that missed the exhibition and others that didn't get a chance to get their hands on the goods. Enjoy!

Titled Creepy Cute, the exhibition included the latest collection of Cohen’s illustrations of happy, colourful and quirky little creatures that are often just a little bit creepy. Using detailed line work and a deliriously vibrant colour scheme, Cohen created an original and memorable set of characters that leave you in a delightedly confused stupor. “Cartoons like Invader Zim, Rocko’s Modern Life and Aaahh!!! Real Monsters have always been a huge influence on my style of work,” Cohen says. “There is something wonderful about creepy little characters that can snap almost instantly into an enraged psychotic frenzy … I just love that element of surprise and the sheer zany nature of it.”

Inspired by Cohen’s illustrations (and her love of nanna crafts), Minnette created an adorable new range of jewellery including rings bangles and cufflinks. “For Creepy Cute, I have taken a different approach to designing and making these pieces,” Minnette explained. “In addition to using materials that I haven’t worked with before such as brass, rubber, wool and glass, I have also employed a variety of processes that are new to me; some jewellery, some craft and some industry.”

Cohen is a self-taught traditional and digital illustrator, completing a Diploma in Multimedia in 2006. He has worked for various web design companies before launching his own business Poke Something That Bites. Cohen is currently the Senior Designer at Alltraders - a leading software development company specialising in custom online apps and websites. Cohen has exhibited in various local art exhibitions including Shaffas 2 and Wild Things.

A graduate of the Adelaide College of the Arts (TAFE SA), Minnette was awarded an Ashington Mentorship placement by the Helpmann Academy with established jeweller Jane Bowden in 2008. She has exhibited locally in several Fringe and SALA Festivals including her first solo exhibition Sweet at Urban Cow Studio in 2009. Minnette is currently an associate in the JamFactory Metal Design Studio and sells her jewellery designs locally and interstate.

Using detailed line work and a deliriously vibrant colour scheme i create original, memorable characters that leave you in a delightedly, confused stupor.

Cartoons like Invader Zim, Rocko’s Modern Life, & Aaahh!!! Real Monsters have always been and still are a huge influence on my style of work. There is ‘something’ about happy, colourful, cute little characters that can snap, almost instantly into an enraged psychotic frenzy. It’s wonderful. Whatever the reason, that element of surprise or the sheer zany nature of it, I love it.

My illustrative pieces have also extended into design for fabrics, furniture and accessories.

I often start a new craft project but I never seem to find the time to finish it. For example, the bed sized hexagon quilt that was so enthusiastically started but left unfinished measuring only half a square meter.

The jewellery and objects that I have created for the exhibition Creepy Cute is my attempt at bringing my love of creating nanna crafts into my jewellery designs.

I have designed pieces for this exhibition using both elements of nanna crafts and of Cohen Gum’s illustrations. I have also taken a different approach to making. I have used materials that I haven’t worked with before such as brass, rubber, wool and glass. I have also used a variety of processes that are new to me; some jewellery, some craft and some industry. Resulting in what I hope you will find to be quite… cute.
